Effect of Increased Adrenergic Activity

were performed before and after oral propranolol administration, 160 mg daily for 2 days. During the 24-hour control period, the QT was always shorter than the QS2 (from 14 ± 3 to 19 ± 4 msec,p < 0.01), while during isoproterenol infusion the QT was always greater than the QS2 (from 28 ± 5 to 34 ± 5 msec, p < 0.01). Group 2 included 26 patients in whom 24-hour urinary epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) were measured the same day as systolic time interval measurements. The E + NE was higher in patients in whom the QT was longer than the QS2 compared with patients in whom the QT was the same or shorter than QS2 (107 ± 9 vs 61 ± 7 ,ug/24 hours, p < 0.05). Group 3 included six patients in whom the heart rate was increased with atrial pacing, from 80 to 130 beats/min. The QT was always shorter than the QS2 (from 13 ± 3 to 24 ± 5 msec, p < 0.01). Adrenergic stimulation results in a relative prolongation of the QT with the QS2 shortening and the QT remaining unaffected. The QT is normally shorter than the QS2, so the duration of QT should always be considered in relationship to the duration of QS2. Finally, a reversal of the normal QT-QS2 relationship may provide a simple index of increased adrenergic activity.

THE ROLE OF NON-ADRENERGIC NON-CHOLINERGIC SYSTEM IN THE PERISTALTIC REFLEX OF GUINE A PIG ILEUM
The effect of some endogenous components -endogenous opiates, cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and somatostatin-as inhibitory or excitatory transmitters in the local nervous pathways involved in peristaltic responses was examined. The peristaltic reflex was studied using a modification of the Trendelenberg preparation. In each preparation, the luminal distens...
متن کاملMechanical activity of isolated aorta strips after prolonged exposure to low frequency electromagnetic fields and its interaction with the cholinergic and adrenergic systems in male rat
Introduction: Public concern about the potential effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) on human health is increased by progressive usage of electrical devices in modern life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prolonged exposure to low frequency EMF on the mechanical activity of isolated thoracic aorta strips in rats. Methods: Fourteen male rats were randomly allocated into...

Background and purpose: The adrenergic system is known to have modulatory influence on anxiety-related behaviour both in human and animals. Dorsal hippocampus is an important brain site in modulation of neurotransmittery and neuroendocrinology of anxiety. The present study, was designed to evaluate the interactions between adrenergic and opioidergic systems in dorsal hippocampus on anxiety. Ma...
متن کاملEffects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity of frog dorsal skin nerve
Clonidine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist not only induces analgesia but also prolongs the effects of local anesthetic substances. In the present study the effects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity from dorsal skin nerve were investigated. The results showed that clonidine (0.5 mM) decreased the formalin effect on electrical nerve activity whereas clonidi...

Introduction: The ginger rhizome has been widely used in traditional medicine for treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. In the present study the effect of ginger alcoholic extract on mechanical activity of isolated jejunum of male rats and also its interaction with cholinergic, adrenergic and Nitrergic systems were investigated. Methods: Seven adult male Wistar rats were anesthetized by et...
